DLO outs HomeDock HD Pro with HDMI

Philips' accessory label DLO today introduced a new high-end iPod integration kit for home theaters. The HomeDock HD Pro is tailored to the same custom home theater audience as the earlier HomeDock Pro but adds HDMI with upscaling, which both allows a high-resolution widescreen interface for playing media from a docked iPod but also full upscaling to either 720p or 1080i. Epson develops high-resolution 4-inch LTPS LCD

Epson Imaging Devices on Tuesday announced it has developed a high-resolution low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFT LCD for use in its next-generation P-6000 and P-7000 photo viewers. The new 4-inch, 640x480 VGA display combines a wide viewing angle of 80 degrees from horizontal and vertical and covers 94 percent of the Adobe RGB color range, achieved thanks to what Epson calls its Photo Fine Premia technology. Epson says the new 200ppi LCD technology will expand and be used in its cellphones, digital cameras and automotive head units and LCDs, and it is considering selling it to other companies as well.

The new LCD technology will be first available on the P-6000 and P-7000 photo viewers that are due for a release at the start of September, priced at $600 and $800, respectively.

NVIDIA reveals low-end GeForce 9400 GT

NVIDIA has quietly bolstered the rear guard of its GPU line with the addition of the GeForce 9400 GT. Sharing the same optimizations as the rest of the 9 series, the chipset has just 16 visual effects cores but is fast enough to double the performance of its GeForce 8400 equivalent from just a year ago, according to the graphics card maker's estimates. A 550MHz main clock speed and 800MHz effective memory clock also keep it relatively cool and let NVIDIA's reference design use a small cooling fan. The improved budget card also supports NVIDIA's CUDA language for running some general-purpose computing on the video card and is one of the least expensive ways to add the feature for in-game physics or more professional tasks such as 3D modeling.

While configurations are liable to vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, a stock should carry 9400 GT 512MB of memory as well as single dual-link DVI and VGA connections for digital and analog sources respectively. NVIDIA hopes to set a new floor for graphics and is targeting the new GeForce card's average asking price at about $59. Third parties should already have cards available now or in the near future, though PC vendors should also bundle their own cards with future desktops.

With photo view - Sony updates NAV-U GPS

Alongside its Xplod updates, Sony today also overhauled its NAV-U mapping devices with a handful of key updates. A new photo viewer lets owners of Sony's cameras swap Memory Sticks to view their JPEG images from the larger 4.8-inch screen. Every GPS unit also a better search, Sony claims: a faster search routine is also mixed with a Quick Link shortcut feature that automatically searches for a favorite restaurant chain or similar point. As the head of the new updates, the U94T also has stereo Bluetooth audio support for both hands-free calls and for relaying music to the car's sound system; the device itself supports Traffic Message Channel notices and can serve as a media player for either AAC or MP3 music as well as MPEG-4 videos. A new gesture control system gives drivers the option of navigating content through swipes and similar motions without having to read the screen itself.

Other models give the user the choice of screen size or features. The U84 has the same 4.8-inch display as the U94T but scraps Bluetooth and traffic; opting for the smaller U47T brings both those two features back in return for its smaller 4.3-inch screen. An entry U44 device has a 3.5-inch screen and drops the wireless and traffic features for the sake of cost.

Prices top out for the NAV-U replacements at $400 and drop in $50 increments down to the $250 price of the U44. Sony declines to set a release date but says preorders are already underway for the four devices.

Nokia to bring N96 to US shores

Nokia today tried its hand again at competing in the US smartphone market with the announcement of a North American edition of the N96. The black slider phone carries the same 16GB of built-in storage, five-megapixel camera, true GPS and Wi-Fi as the version just reaching Europe but makes a few key changes to adapt to the Western market. The update brings full 850MHz band HSDPA to support 3G on AT&T and Rogers but in return loses the ability to tune mobile digital TV, with no DVB-H broadcasts available on the continent.

The N96 will continue to be sold as an unlocked device that can optionally be used with T-Mobile USA or international carriers, and as a result comes only with preloaded Nokia software, which includes a three-month trial for Nokia Maps as well as a racing game from the N-Gage catalog. An absence of the carrier discounts that come from locked versions will push the price up to a full $895 when the N96 ships in the fall; it's unknown whether Rogers will offer a subsidized version to replace or complement the N95 8GB.

Virgin gets approval for Helio takeover

Virgin Mobile today said the US government has greenlit its buyout of Helio. The approval comes without having to change the original terms of the deal, which hands over all of Helio's 170,000 customers and actually improves the rates Virgin pays Sprint to use its network for calls and data. It also significantly reduces Helio's debt and gives the partly Korean-owned company two seats on Virgin's board of directors.

Making the deal gives Virgin access to a subscription-based service alongside its signature prepaid feature and also supplies much more advanced data services, which include both Internet-based radio and video streams as well as GPS-aware apps.

Virgin hasn't yet outlined its long-term plans or whether it would significantly vary its strategy from either that of its own or Helio to include new devices and features; the company has often focused on younger or simpler buyers rather than smartphones.

Invisibility A step closer

Scientists in the US say they are a step closer to developing materials that could render people invisible.

Researchers at the University of California in Berkeley have developed a material that can bend light around 3D objects making them "disappear".

The materials do not occur naturally but have been created on a nano scale, measured in billionths of a metre.

The team says the principles could one day be scaled up to make invisibility cloaks large enough to hide people.

Stealth operations

The findings, by scientists led by Xiang Zhang, were published in the journals Nature and Science.

The light-bending effect relies on reversing refraction, the effect that makes a straw placed in water appear bent.

Previous efforts have shown this negative refraction effect using microwaves—a wavelength far longer than humans can see.

Scientists have created an electronic eye-shaped camera

Engineers John Rogers of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Yonggang Huang of Northwestern University, Chicago have created an electronic eye-shaped camera that uses a new class of electronics technology that can conform to almost any shape of a human eye. The new retina-like camera sensor uses flexible photosensitive pixels.

"Using simple mechanics principles, the researchers have produced, for the first time, electronic devices on a hemispherical surface so that they can take images much like those captured by the human eye," said Ken Chong, advisor in the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Directorate, who is one of the officers overseeing the researchers' National Science Foundation grant, in a statement.

Microsoft promoting Open Source

Microsoft on Friday expanded its support for the open-source community by giving money to the Apache Software Foundation, the first time it has given money to the long-standing open-source project.

Microsoft also said it is contributing code to support a PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) project and committing to offer royalty-free specifications for Windows Server and.NET Framework protocols as part of its expanded support for the open-source community. The company announced its plans at the O'Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON) now being held in Portland, Oregon.

Under increased global pressure from technology regulators and open-source competitors, Microsoft has moved toward a more open development policy for some time. In February it made its boldest move yet to support open source by promising greater transparency in both its software development and business practices, and opening up previously proprietary APIs to some of its major products, such as Windows and Office, for third-party use.

Now there are more Chinese surfers than U.S.

Overtaking the US, Chinas internet-users population has reached 253 million by the end of June, reflecting the explosive growth in the web-user market in the country, data showed.

Latest government figures also showed that China also had the largest number of broadband subscribers at 214 million, more than 80 per cent of the total domestic internet population.

The number of Internet users at 253 million marked a 56.2 per cent rise from 162 million reported in 2007, the China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC), a semi-official organisation, said in a report.

The US has 218 million net users till December 31, 2007 when China had 210 million users. Based on the US growth pattern, CNNIC estimated that the numbers in the US could have now reached 230 million by the end of June this year.

Toshiba - 400 Gigabytes for your Laptop

Toshiba's storage division is gearing up for the holiday season with a line of 400-Gbyte 2.5-inch disk drives.

Toshiba said that the 5,400-RPM MK4058GSX line, with capacities up to 400 GB, will begin shipping in September, in time for OEMs to build them into laptops they can sell in time for the holidays. The company also announced the MKxx54GSY family, a line of 7,200-RPM drives that will begin shipping in August.

Toshiba claimed that the new 5,400, 400-Gbyte drives are nearly inaudible, at 2.5 bels for both idle and operating modes. Toshiba specified the drive's power consumption at 0.0015 watts per gigabyte, which would make a 400-Gbyte drive consume 0.6 watts. Toshiba believes OEMs interested in quiet video playback will purchase the new drives.

The 7,200-RPM MKxx54GSY family runs at between 2.5 to 2.8 bels in operating mode, depending upon the size of the drive. Power consumption ranges from 0.0028 W/GB to 0.01113 W/GB.

Indians off-target on the first day

BEIJING: The Indian shooters got off to an indifferent start, while the Chinese failed to achieve their target of winning the first gold medal of the Olympic Games. Former World champion Katerina Emmons of the Czech Republic took the stage in the women’s 10m air rifle event, where China was eyeing the gold, by equalling a World record and setting Olympic records to provide a rousing start to the shooting competition here on Saturday.

Anjali Bhagwat was unable to capitalise on her rich experience and failed to build on a good start, as she finished 29th with a 393. After two rounds of 99, Anjali slipped with rounds of 97 and 98.

The other Indian shooter in the women’s air rifle event, Avneet Kaur Sidhu, a finalist in the last World championship, was also unable to find consistency after having shot 98 and 100, to eventually slip to 39th, following further rounds of 96 and 95 for a total of 389.

World record

Katerina Emmons, who had won the bronze in Athens, shot a perfect 400 to set an Olympic record, which also equalled the World record held by 10 others, and shot the best in the final as well with a 103.5 to set a final Olympic record.

Chinese hope and defending champion Du Li shot a 399 in the qualifying phase, but finished fifth.

“It is OK. I scored 399. I wasn’t fully prepared for the pressure of competing at home,” said Du Li.

Nokia N99 Mobile with 8 Megapixel Camera

Nokia is going to soon announce the launch of the next Nseries mobile phone with a 8 Megapixel camera and xenon flash which you can preview in the following image. The design is similar to the Nokia N93 mobile phone which comes with a slider and the camera can be rotated in any direction.

The Nokia N93 had only a 3.2Megapixel camera but this one may have a 6 to 8 Megapixel camera and make it the best digital camera mobile phone with the highest sized image resolutions and quality. Though Nokia has not released any official news about this upcoming mobile phone but this a kind of rumour which is spread everywhere because Nokia needs to overcome their own 5Megapixel N95 and Sony Ericsson K850i mobile phones.
