The newly developed "ultra-thinning" technology will allow a significant increase in storage for smartphones and other mobile devices, the company says. Thursday, November 12, 2009: Dell has launched three new commercial workgroup printers to help businesses of all sizes increase productivity and lower their total cost of printing. Printers available today in the United States include the Dell 5130cdn, claimed to be the world's fastest single function letter-size office colour laser printer, the Dell 7130cdn, Dell’s first LED colour printer with tabloid-size printing capability; and the Dell 3330dn, a single-function monochrome laser printer for high-performance black and white printing.

These new printers will be available in Europe and the Middle East on 24 November 2009.

The Dell 5130cdn can print up to 47 single-sided and up to 37 double-sided letter pages per minute (ppm) in both mono and colour (actual print speeds will vary with use), making it the world’s fastest letter size single-function office colour laser printer. The 5130cdn also premiers ColorbyDell, a total print quality solution that claims to deliver excellent colour saturation and image sharpness and outstanding print quality. This is enabled through a combination of a new image enhancement algorithm, advanced toner technology and improvements in print engine design.

The Dell 5130cdn is also designed to bring energy and cost savings by using a new toner formulation that fuses at a lower temperature, enabling a remarkable Cost Per Page (CPP) of 1.04c for black and white and 7.71c for colour print outs.

Dell has also announced the availability of Dell ColorTrack Pro — a built-in remote administration tool for IT administrators to centrally monitor and control access to colour printing on the Dell 5130cdn. Designed for workgroup environments, Dell ColorTrack Pro manages user access at the server level, to easily control printing and toner costs.

The Dell 7130cdn is Dell's first LED-based colour printer with the ability to print up to tabloid-size, Pantone approved colour prints, for accurate colour reproduction. The Dell 7130cdn includes numerous paper handling options, a powerful processor and robust memory. This allows the printer to print the first page (First Print Out Time) as quickly as 6.5 seconds in both mono and colour.

The Dell 7130cdn is available today in the US from $2,799 including one year Next Business Day (NBD) Onsite Service after Remote Diagnosis.

On the black and white printing front, Dell announced the Dell 3330dn, a single-function black and white performance printer that can print up to 40 letter pages per minute (ppm) (actual print speed will vary with use), with a monthly duty cycle up to 80,000 pages. The Dell 3330dn, as the company puts it, packs work-horse reliability and has paper drawer and memory expansion options that grow with increasing business demands.

The Dell 3330dn is currently available in the US from $599 with one year Advanced Exchange Service.

How A CPU Is Made --Intel Shows

Sand. Made up of 25 percent silicon, is, after oxygen, the second most abundant chemical element that's in the earth's crust. Sand, especially quartz, has high percentages of silicon in the form of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and is the base ingredient for semiconductor manufacturing.
After procuring raw sand and separating the silicon, the excess material is disposed of and the silicon is purified in multiple steps to finally reach semiconductor manufacturing quality which is called electronic grade silicon. The resulting purity is so great that electronic grade silicon may only have one alien atom for every one billion silicon atoms. After the purification process, the silicon enters the melting phase. In this picture you can see how one big crystal is grown from the purified silicon melt. The resulting mono-crystal is called an ingot.
A mono-crystal ingot is produced from electronic grade silicon. One ingot weighs approximately 100 kilograms (or 220 pounds) and has a silicon purity of 99.9999 percent.
The ingot is then moved onto the slicing phase where individual silicon discs, called wafers, are sliced thin. Some ingots can stand higher than five feet. Several different diameters of ingots exist depending on the required wafer size. Today, CPUs are commonly made on 300 mm wafers.
Once cut, the wafers are polished until they have flawless, mirror-smooth surfaces. Intel doesn't produce its own ingots and wafers, and instead purchases manufacturing-ready wafers from third-party companies. Intels advanced 45 nm High-K/Metal Gate process uses wafers with a diameter of 300 mm (or 12-inches). When Intel first began making chips, it printed circuits on 50 mm (2-inches) wafers. These days, Intel uses 300 mm wafers, resulting in decreased costs per chip.
The blue liquid, depicted above, is a photo resist finish similar to those used in film for photography. The wafer spins during this step to allow an evenly-distributed coating that's smooth and also very thin.
At this stage, the photo-resistant finish is exposed to ultra violet (UV) light. The chemical reaction triggered by the UV light is similar to what happens to film material in a camera the moment you press the shutter button.
Areas of the resist on the wafer that have been exposed to UV light will become soluble. The exposure is done using masks that act like stencils. When used with UV light, masks create the various circuit patterns. The building of a CPU essentially repeats this process over and over until multiple layers are stacked on top of each other.
A lens (middle) reduces the mask's image to a small focal point. The resulting "print" on the wafer is typically four times smaller, linearly, than the mask's pattern.
In the picture we have a representation of what a single transistor would appear like if we could see it with the naked eye. A transistor acts as a switch, controlling the flow of electrical current in a computer chip. Intel researchers have developed transistors so small that they claim roughly 30 million of them could fit on the head of a pin.
After being exposed to UV light, the exposed blue photo resist areas are completely dissolved by a solvent. This reveals a pattern of photo resist made by the mask. The beginnings of transistors, interconnects, and other electrical contacts begin to grow from this point.
The photo resist layer protects wafer material that should not be etched away. Areas that were exposed will be etched away with chemicals.
After the etching, the photo resist is removed and the desired shape becomes visible.
More photo resist (blue) is applied and then re-exposed to UV light. Exposed photo resist is then washed off again before the next step, which is called ion doping. This is the step where ion particles are exposed to the wafer, allowing the silicon to change its chemical properties in a way that allows the CPU to control the flow of electricity.
Through a process called ion implantation (one form of a process called doping) the exposed areas of the silicon wafer are bombarded with ions. Ions are implanted in the silicon wafer to alter the way silicon?i these areas conduct electricity. Ions are propelled onto the surface of the wafer at very high velocities. An electrical field accelerates the ions to a speed of over 300,000 km/hour (roughly 185,000 mph)
After the ion implantation, the photo resist will be removed and the material that should have been doped (green) now has alien atoms implanted.
This transistor is close to being finished. Three holes have been etched into the insulation layer (magenta color) above the transistor. These three holes will be filled with copper, which will make up the connections to other transistors.
The wafers are put into a copper sulphate solution at this stage. Copper ions are deposited onto the transistor through a process called electroplating. The copper ions travel from the positive terminal (anode) to the negative terminal (cathode) which is represented by the wafer.
The copper ions settle as a thin layer on the wafer surface.
The excess material is polished off leaving a very thin layer of copper.
Multiple metal layers are created to interconnects (think wires) in between the various transistors. How these connections have to be wired is determined by the architecture and design teams that develop the functionality of the respective processor (for example, Intels Core i7 processor). While computer chips look extremely flat, they may actually have over 20 layers to form complex circuitry. If you look at a magnified view of a chip, you will see an intricate network of circuit lines and transistors that look like a futuristic, multi-layered highway system.
This fraction of a ready wafer is being put through a first functionality test. In this stage test patterns are fed into every single chip and the response from the chip monitored and compared to "the right answer."
After tests determine that the wafer has a good yield of functioning processor units, the wafer is cut into pieces (called dies).
The dies that responded with the right answer to the test pattern will be put forward for the next step (packaging). Bad dies are discarded. Several years ago, Intel made key chains out of bad CPU dies.
This is an individual die, which has been cut out in the previous step (slicing). The die shown here is a die of an Intel Core i7 processor.
The substrate, the die, and the heatspreader are put together to form a completed processor. The green substrate builds the electrical and mechanical interface for the processor to interact with the rest of the PC system. The silver heatspreader is a thermal interface where a cooling solution will be applied. This will keep the processor cool during operation.
A microprocessor is the most complex manufactured product on earth. In fact, it takes hundreds of steps and only the most important ones have been visualized in this picture story.
During this final test the processors will be tested for their key characteristics (among the tested characteristics are power dissipation and maximum frequency).
Based on the test result of class testing processors with the same capabilities are put into the same transporting trays. This process is called "binning". Binning determines the maximum operating frequency of a processor, and batches are divided and sold according to stable specifications.
The manufactured and tested processors (again Intel Core i7 processor is shown here) either go to system manufacturers in trays or into retail stores in a box. Iron Man: Ultimate Two-Disc Edition (Blu-ray)

In watching Iron Man, one gets the sense that director Jon Favreau said, “Yeah, let’s tell a great story, but what I really want to do is make projectors and amplifiers smoke!”

And did he ever.

The second half of the movie could best be summed up as follows: living, breathing crash-test dummy in shiny metallic armor with rockets on his feet, a bucket on his head, and missile launchers on his shoulders beats the snot out of pretty much everybody.

If that doesn’t sound like the makings of a sphincter-tightening, filling-rattling home theater demo, I don’t know what does.

The Incredible Hulk (Blu-ray)

It may have been the verdigris-headed stepchild of this summer’s slate of superhero flicks, but this quasi-reboot of Ang Lee’s disastrous 2003 snooze-fest gets Show-Off bonus points for taking its “Hulk smash!” mantra to heart.

Nearly every scene pummels the screen with detailed debris and bold splashes of comicbook color that would have made Jack “The King” Kirby proud.

And the sound is a beast in and of itself. If your subwoofer doesn’t rip through the room like a gamma-fueled mutant with a bad attitude and a bone to pick during the final fight sequence, it might be time to call your custom installer for an upgrade.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PlayStation 3)

This unparalleled interactive magnum opus blurs the line between movies and games, not only with its renowned storytelling techniques, but also its groundbreaking cinematic framing and frighteningly realistic visuals.

From the opening scenes you’ll find yourself feeling less like a gamer and more like a movie star, thrown onto a dusty dystopian back lot without a script.

You’re on your own for crafts services, too.

But the payoff is that you get to explore a disturbingly detailed world that looks like it was dreamt up by that twisted little neighbor kid from Toy Story after a few hard years and a stint in the Special Forces.

The Fall (Blu-ray)

This heartbreaking little bedtime story may not boast the best action scenes or the most explosions, but what it does have is a one-of-a-kind aesthetic and a film-like presence that must be seen to be believed.

If your friends have complained that they have a hard time appreciating the difference between DVD and Blu-ray, pop this one in to set them straight.

With none of the heavy-handed picture processing that plagues so many high-definition transfers bogging things down, you’ll swear you can taste the tang of desert dirt on the back of your throat, and feel the thread-count in the luscious, vibrant fabrics that dominate the film’s fantasy sequences.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Blu-ray)

If your eyes are feeling a little overwhelmed by all the color, not to worry; this magnificently macabre Tim Burton musical still makes for one of the year’s best Show-Offs, with hardly a happy hue to be found in its chilling two-hour run.

It’s no less stunning, though—in fact, the film’s bold chiaroscuro contrasts weave together to craft a rich, dimensional image that’s disturbingly inviting despite all the dankness.

What really sets the Blu-ray apart from the DVD, though, is the ten-foot-tall Dolby TrueHD soundtrack, which pushes the music along with sweet vocals, thumping percussion, and strings thick enough to hold up the Golden Gate Bridge.

Sleeping Beauty: Platinum Edition (Blu-ray)

There has been no shortage of amazing computer-animated releases this year, but for my money the cartoon that deserves the spotlight is the retro-tastic restoration of Disney’s 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty.

This brilliant Blu-ray transfer preserves the original ultra-widescreen Technicolor presentation of the film beautifully; in fact, the presentation itself is practically transparent.

Every line flows with fluid grace. Every color oozes off the screen.

You’ll feel as if you’re looking at, not a highfalutin’ digital copy of decades-old three-strip celluloid, but rather the original animation cells themselves, straight from the artists’ hands and still waiting to dry.

Speed Racer (Blu-ray)

Sadly, this kooky cartoon adaptation makes its way to Blu-ray with a boring old compressed Dolby Digital soundtrack (no Plus, no TrueHD, no nothing), so it pulls off the starting line with a severe handicap.

But it isn’t long before you forget the less-than-perfect sound and get lost in a visual experience that falls somewhere between a sugar high and an acid trip inside a giant liquid kaleidoscope.

Another few minutes of neon colors, razor-sharp details, and shadows the shade of the deepest depths of a black hole and you might even forgive the ridiculous writing and laborious acting. Seriously. It looks that good.

Chamber Music Palisades: Shostakovich/Debussy/Brockman (DVD-Audio/Video or iTrax download)

The only way to effectively describe the sonic effect of this exquisite AIX Records release is hauntingly holographic.

As with all of Dr. Mark Waldrep’s other recordings, it strips away the crud and crappy compression that cripple so much of today’s music.

What’s left is a breath of fresh music—a sonic experience that verges on the transcendental. The recording’s instruments have weight. They take up space in the air around your room.

The music doesn’t simply move through the air; it moves the air with it, filling the spaces between your speakers with a rich verisimilitude that few music fans will ever be lucky enough to hear at home.

Writer/director Julie Taymor may be woefully incapable of stringing together a coherent narrative, but who can deny the bombastic audiovisual splendor of her films?

Her latest—a helter-skelter tour of the volatile 1960s strung together with some of the best Beatles covers ever laid down—is no exception; in fact, it may well be her most beautifully incoherent spectacle yet.

The soundtrack blasts through the room like a Fab Four bullet blasted out of a warm gun, and the visuals come off like a cross
between a Calvin Klein advert and a thermonuclear meltdown at a Jelly Belly factory.

But in a good way.

Editor's Review - Advanced X Video Converter

This program is designed to help you convert, split and join your video files. It supports input files like AVI, MPEG, DAT, WMV, ASF and MOV and converts them into another one of the above formats. You can also use it to extract audio from video files or to capture images from video.

A feature that I liked when testing the program, was that it can join files of different files types. When splitting one of the above mentioned files, the output files could be one of the following: AVI, MPEG, WMV or MOV. You can choose even the video and audio compression codecs or settings for the output files. Also, you can select the size and frame rate for the output file. The same output files are available for the 'Join' feature. When testing the program I've tried to join some files and I would have appreciated any joining options such as transition effects.

Another interesting feature is 'Extract Audio From Video'. This works very fast and creates a WAV, WMA or an MP3 file. Also, you can convert video to picture. Here you can select the number of pictures per second (the number must be between 1 and 100), or a picture every few frames. You also have a 'Select Video Range as well as the picture resolution.

The interface is very easy to use and understand.

Pluses: You can join different types of video files into one single output file.

For all those who were eagerly waiting for the official release of Grand Theft Auto IV has got somethng to prepare for. Rockstar today released the official PC system spcification for the game. The hardware requirements as expected, is on the higher side. The console versions have produced impressive response to the gamers around the world.

From the hardware requirements, it is clear that a minimum of average level gaming PC is required to enjoy the GTA IV experience. But the disappointing news is that the release is going to delay again. GTA IV for PC is expecting to be released in November mid. The Nokia N97 is the tip of the spear in Nokia's smartphone lineup. It is the most powerful, smartest and fully featured phone of the company. It is also the first Nokia phone to make use of a large touch-display and that alone has raised the expectations from die hard Nokia fans that have refused to switch over to the iPhone. And Nokia has put quite a lot of work and thought in the N97. I had a first look when Nokia was still developing the N97 and I was looking forward to get my hands on the final product. In this review, I will tell you how I used it, and how well it did. Does the Nokia N97 live up to the hype?

Context

Rushing a review is great to get links, but not the best way to get a good feel for something, so I used the Nokia N97 for a few weeks, mainly as a smartphone with Exchange support. Web browsing was tested regularly to read news and check various sites. Facebook was accessed via the Facebook application included in the phone.

BSNL launches new service delivery platform for 3G customers

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) today launched its new service delivery platform 'BSNL Live' - a web portal that would offer videos on demand and movie streaming for its 3G customers for the first time in the country.

"The portal has movie streaming, games, full track songs, video clips and it will be a single window shop for all the mobile value added contents," BSNL CMD Kuldeep Goyal told reporters here today.

He further said the technical platform hosting 'BSNL Live' was a Service Delivery Platform (SDP) which, as a mobile operator, BSNL was the first to deploy.

It was built to meet the needs of mobile network operators, media companies, service providers etc. It has been developed with the assistance of Ericsson, he further said.

This service which was launched today would now be available in over 100 cities of northern and eastern parts of India including Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, UP, Uttrakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Orissa, Andaman and Nicobar.

"After this 760 more cities countrywide are planned to be covered progressively in the next 6 months," he said.

The launching ceremony also saw the movie premier of 'Jail' on BSNL 3G mobile through BSNL Live portal in the presence of film Director Madhur Bhandarkar, Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, and actress Mughdha Godse.

The end user price points of the contents like games will be Rs 35-100, songs Rs 15, video Rs 10 to Rs 20, video on demand at Rs 40 and wallpapers at Rs 10.

Moreover, the video category will have contents like an exclusive preview of forthcoming films, footage of celebrities, interviews etc.

However, Goyal said BSNL has been able to rope in just 13,000 3G mobile customers since its launch.

"We have found that several areas were not fully covered under 3G services and we are now improving the coverage," he said, adding, "the company is focusing more on value added services which will help attract more customers to 3G mobile," Goyal said.

At present, Value Added Services constitute 5-6 per cent of the total revenue of BSNL, he said.for more
