Inside the Commodore 64

This pioneering PC made instant geeks out of millions of people back in the 80s. But what lies within the Commodore 64's fetching brown shell?

Can You Make It More Brown?

The Guinness Book of World Records lists the Commodore 64 as the best-selling computer model of all time: Sales estimates range from 17 million to 30 million units worldwide in the years between its splashy introduction in 1982 and its reluctant end in 1994. With so many C64s out there, this home computing pioneer clearly was the right product at the right time and at the right price ($595 at launch) for a lot of people. Even now, nerds everywhere get misty-eyed when they talk about it, heaping praise on the brown-on-brown low-cost wonder that dominated the low-end computer market for most of the 80s. (And according to PC World contributing editor--and onetime editor in chief--Harry McCracken, the C64's beguiling TV ads may have had a lot to do with the model's success.) Let's go to the workbench and look at the insides of this little PC that could.

The Best Phone for Business Ever

What makes iPhone a great business phone? Simple. The same features that make it a revolutionary mobile device. With iPhone 2.0 software, iPhone does even more for your enterprise. It supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, delivering push email, calendar, and contacts. And it gives mobile users secure access to corporate resources with Cisco IPSec VPN and wireless network services with WPA2 Enterprise and 802.1X authentication.

Best email on a mobile device.

Email on iPhone offers a viewing experience unlike any other mobile device. Its rich HTML format means email looks and acts like email on your computer. With support for Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, PDF, JPEG, and now iWork, attachments can be viewed exactly as they were designed to be. Users can even zoom in on important information with the tap of a finger. And now that iPhone has built-in support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, users get all the benefits of push email.

Up-to-the-minute calendar.

With its Multi-Touch interface, no other mobile calendar application is as intuitive or simple to use. Tap to accept or decline a meeting invitation. Tap again to see who’s attending, check scheduling conflicts, review the agenda, or add alerts. Colour coding makes calendar entries easy to organize and view at a glance. And push calendar and integrated support for time zones means users can stay up to date no matter where their business takes them.

More powerful contacts.

Finding contacts on iPhone is as simple as scrolling through your contact list or using the search feature. Add or change a contact and it updates everywhere automatically. But what really makes Contacts ideal for business is its seamless integration with features such as Maps, Safari, and SMS. Find customer offices using Maps with GPS. Get directions and call directly from map listings to confirm. Add vCards received via email. Look up contacts faster with search support for companywide Global Address Lists (GAL). And with push contacts on iPhone, contact lists are always up to date.

Desktop-class web browsing.

iPhone uses Safari — the most advanced browser on a mobile device — and displays the web the way it was designed to be seen. With support for web standards, SSL, and Cisco IPSec VPN, iPhone delivers secure access to corporate intranets so users can access their company’s resources wherever they are. Web Clips give quick, one-tap access from the Home screen to important websites and web applications. And the fastest available connection to the web is always ensured, whether it’s EDGE, 3G, or Wi-Fi

More for business.

iPhone has even more great features for business users. Find a customer’s address and get directions with GPS-powered Maps. Send SMS messages to multiple recipients. Get a one-tap weather report before your next business trip. Check stocks at a glance. Write notes to save or email. Even perform complex calculations with the built-in scientific calculator.

3G Speeds World Wide

3G technology gives iPhone fast access to the Internet and email over cellular networks around the world. iPhone 3G also makes it possible to do more in more places: Surf the web, download email, get directions, and watch video — even while you’re on a call.

How it works.

iPhone 3G uses a technology protocol called HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) to download data fast over UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) networks. Email attachments and web pages load twice as fast on 3G networks as on 2G EDGE networks.1 And since iPhone 3G seamlessly switches between EDGE, faster 3G, and even faster Wi-Fi, you always get the best speeds possible.

Talk and browse. At the same time.

iPhone already gives you mobile multitasking. But 3G technology lets you multitask in more places — without connecting via Wi-Fi. Since 3G networks enable simultaneous data and voice, you can talk on the phone while surfing the web, checking email, or using Maps. All from your 3G cellular network.

Security Safer by Design

Every Mac is secure — right out of the box — thanks to the proven foundation of Mac OS X. Apple engineers have designed Leopard with more security to protect your personal data and make your online life safer.
Safe and easy.

The security features built into Leopard are unobtrusive, easy to use, and accessible to everyone. And Apple responds quickly to any threat, providing timely software updates that make installing the latest security enhancements one-click simple.
Secure from the open source.

Apple engineers use a variety of approaches to identify potential security threats and proactively protect the OS against them. Since the core of Leopard is open source, Apple gets the benefit of a worldwide community of security researchers who help to further improve security on the Mac. Apple also works with a number of security organizations, including CERT/CC, FIRST, the FreeBSD security team, and the Department of Homeland Security.
Danger-free downloads.

Sometimes innocent-looking files contain malicious applications in disguise. That’s why files downloaded using Safari, Mail, and iChat are screened to determine if they contain applications. If they do, Leopard alerts you, then warns you the first time you open one. You decide whether to open the application or cancel the attempt. And Leopard can use digital signatures to verify that an application hasn’t been changed since it was created.
DIY encryption.

The Disk Utility tool in Leopard helps you create encrypted disk images using 128-bit or even stronger 256-bit AES encryption. Safely email documents, files, and folders to friends and colleagues, save the encrypted disk image to CD or DVD, or store it on your Mac or a network file server.
Connect with confidence.

The VPN client in Leopard offers increased compatibility with the most widely used VPN servers on the Internet. So connecting to corporate networks securely — without additional software — is fast and easy.
Safe to share.

New sharing preferences in Leopard show you which folders your Mac is sharing and give you more control over who can access shared folders. Add users from your Address Book, create new file-sharing accounts so friends and family can securely access your files, or tie into a corporate directory to add users from your network. Sharing options abound in Leopard.
Sandbox tested.

Sometimes hackers try to hijack an application to run malicious code. Sandboxing helps ensure that applications do only what they’re intended to by restricting which files they can access, whether they can talk to the network, and whether they can be used to launch other applications. Helper applications in Leopard — including the software that enables Bonjour and the Spotlight indexer — are sandboxed to guard against attackers.
